Sophia Kathleen Stephens, 87, passed away April 18, 2023, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. She was born October 17, 1935, in rural Inman, KS, the daughter of Henry D. and Tina D. Klaassen Thiessen. A high school graduate of Central Christian Academy, she then received her registered nurse degree from Grace School of Nursing, Hutchinson. She was a surgical nurse most of her life.
Sophia was a member and very involved in St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Inman; was a volunteer at 10,000 Villages; was on the Inman Museum Board; and the Hutchinson Concert Series Board.
She married James Stephens on November 5, 1983. He passed away on January 3, 2022.
Survivors include daughters, Diane Morgan-Griffin (William Griffin), Kansas City, MO and Lisa (Andrew) Entz, Wichta; stepchildren, Annel (Travis) Scates, Benton, KS and Daren Stephens, Inman; a brother, Bruce (Verbie) Thiessen, Inman; grandchildren, Tina Busenitz, Dana Oswald, Scott Entz, and Luke Entz, all of Wichita; step grandchildren, Annelise Scates, Las Vegas, NV and Mikaelynn Scates, Benton, KS; and 8 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lilly Ann Pankratz and Eva Friesen; 4 brothers, Phil, Clarence, Leo, and Ben Thiessen; niece, Janet Bever; and a nephew, Greg Thiessen.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Inman Funeral Home. Burial will take place at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at North Inman Cemetery. Celebration of Life Services will follow at 11:00 AM at the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. Services will be live streamed on the Inman Funeral Home Facebook Page.
