Harlo Schmidt

Harlo Schmidt, 97, passed away on May 20, 2025, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. He was born September 3, 1927, on the family farm outside of Buhler, KS to Cornelius Jacob and Mary Buller Schmidt, the youngest of 6 children. He graduated with the class of 1946 from Buhler High School where he was active in athletics and the Glee Club. In 1953 Harlo was drafted into 1-W service and worked as a psychiatric aide at Topeka State Hospital.

On July 22, 1955, Harlo married Glennis Siemens from Buhler. They became parents of three daughters: Denise, Angela, and Amy.

Harlo worked for Cessna/Eaton in Hutchinson for 34 years as a liaison engineer. In addition, Harlo also farmed part time and was an avid gardener.

After retiring in 1990 Harlo dedicated much of his time to volunteering and helping others. He was always ready to lend a hand and was a natural in creating connections between people.

Harlo was baptized in 1944 in Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church. He was a member of the Buhler Mennonite Church until his death. He was a deacon and sang in the choir for many years. Harlo volunteered in his community by transporting retirement home residents to their medical appointments, participating in Kiwanis, being a member of the city council and a 4-H leader. Harlo and Glennis helped at the MCC Sale throughout their lives. They volunteered together at the Ten Thousand Villages/Etc. Shop in Hutchinson for nearly 20 years.

Harlo is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Glennis, his children: Denise Schmidt, Dillon, CO, Angela (Calvin) Coady, Wichita, KS, and Amy (Michael) Ehmann, Bézéril, France; grandchildren, Ian Borgeson, Aidan Borgeson, Jocelyn Conrad, Kelsey Coady, Jonah Ehmann, Celia Ehmann, Sarah Ehmann, and 5 great grandchildren.

Harlo was preceded in death by his son in law, Leif Borgeson and his siblings: Wilbur, Edwin J., and Marvin Schmidt, Elva Kentfield, and Laurene Reimer.

Cremation is planned. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at Buhler Mennonite Church, Buhler KS. The service will be live streamed on the Inman Funeral Home Facebook Page. Memorial donations can be made to the Mennonite Central Committee (mcc.org).
